Good Old Google Reader

What's this?

A few days ago Google took away the old social sharing features in Google Reader and replaced them with new Google+ sharing features. Not only were the old features taken away, but the shared data was also turned into big JSON files that aren't very nice to read and search for humans. Many of the old Google Reader users weren't happy with the changes. Good Old Google Reader is a way to translate that old data into a much more human-friendly format.

How does it work?

It's very easy. You just have to download the files Google Reader provides, upload them to Good Old Google Reader, and then read all your data in a much more human-friendly way.

First you need to download your files from Google Reader. This is the hardest part. Go to the Google Reader settings. Now just click on the "Import/Export" tab. At the "Export your information" section you'll see a table with all the things you can download. Right now Good Old Google Reader can only process the "Items you have shared" data, but more data will be processable soon. Download the "Items you have shared" with the "Reader JSON" format, not the "JSON Activity Stream" one. After doing that you should have a file called "shared-items.json".

Now the easy part. In the form below just click on the "Choose..." button and choose the "shared-items.json" in your system. Then just click on "Submit" and wait a little bit for it to upload. That may take some time, since we're dealing with big files here.

Just use the form:

Is this all?

No way! I want to be able to process all relevant data from the Google Reader files, so there will soon be possible to see "liked" items, "stared" items and so on.

How does the output look like?

Like this.

I like it, but I'd like to suggest a change/improvement/feature/whatever!

Thanks! If you want to suggest any change just send me an email to gogr@pixelrobot.net. All feedback is welcome.

Why the ads?

This ads?

To pay the bills.

Could you show me your code, please?

Sure, fellow nerd. The source code will be available soonish.First I want to polish it a bit, document it, and get all the basic features working in a more or less stable way.

I want to be informed of future changes/improvements/features/whatever, but I don't want to check the site all the time to see what's new.

For people like you I've created a newsletter for the project. No spam attached.

What about my privacy?

All the data you upload is deleted from the server as soon as it gets processed, so there's nothing to worry about.
